Year 10 Work Experience: Exploring Future Pathways

Posted: 10th June 2026

Year 10 work experience is a key part of Sidcot’s Futures Programme, which supports students in understanding the wide range of opportunities available beyond school. Through tailored university, apprenticeship, and careers guidance, alongside experiences such as work placements, students are encouraged to explore their interests and plan their next steps with confidence.

This year, students took part in a varied and engaging programme of work experience, gaining valuable insight into different careers while building confidence, independence and real-world skills. Students undertook exciting opportunities both locally and further afield, with some travelling nationally and internationally to destinations such as Madrid and New York.

Across these placements, students explored a broad range of industries. In education settings, including primary schools, they developed communication skills and grew in confidence working with younger pupils. Others gained insight into caring professions through organisations such as St Peter’s Hospice, Nuffield Health and local veterinary clinics, offering a valuable introduction to healthcare, wellbeing and charity work.

Some students experienced the fast-paced nature of business and hospitality, with placements at venues such as Puxton Park, the Riverside Inn and independent retail settings. Others pursued more hands-on or creative routes, working with companies like Ashton Electrical or exploring areas such as model making. A number of students also spent time in corporate environments, including estate agents, architects and recruitment firms, gaining first-hand experience of the workplace and developing key employability skills.

Across all placements, Sidcot students represented the School exceptionally well. Employers commented on their positivity, willingness to learn and genuine curiosity as they explored possible future pathways.

“Work experience was super fun, but also challenging; it tested my skills every day, which led me to learn very helpful skills.”

“I worked at Bristol Maritime… it gave me a clear idea of what I will want to do for work later on.”

“I went to New York to work… I definitely improved my confidence and feel more ready for the working world.”

“I worked in a St Peter’s Hospice charity shop… I learned to be more efficient and think carefully about what I was doing.”

“I went to Ashton Electricians… learning practical skills like testing electrics and changing installations.”
