The Duke of York’s Royal Military School welcomed Princess Anne on a visit in her role as Royal Patron.
The Princess Royal met students and staff and saw life at the school first-hand for young people, including children from service families.
She attended the school’s annual Beret Parade and formally presented ceremonial berets to the school’s new Year 7 students.
The Beret Parade marks an important milestone for new students, affectionally known as Dukies, as they are formally welcomed into the school community. This gave Princess Anne the opportunity to observe the school’s military heritage and traditions.
Alex Foreman, Principal at the school, said: “It was a privilege to welcome the Princess Royal to the school in her role as Royal Patron.
“Today’s Beret Parade perfectly captures what makes the school special. Our newest students were formally welcomed into a community with more than two centuries of history, while our senior students demonstrated the leadership, confidence and character that the school seeks to develop in every Dukie.
“Princess Anne’s commitment to service and leadership aligns closely with our own values, and we were delighted to share with her the opportunities and experiences that make this school such a distinctive place.”
Princess Anne’s visit highlights the school’s relationship with the Royal Family. Founded in 1803 under Royal patronage to educate the children of British service personnel, the school has maintained strong royal connections for more than 200 years.
The school is also proud of its longstanding association with HRH The Duke of Kent, who served as Royal Patron for many decades, and still maintains close ties as Royal Patron Emeritus.
