The former head Boy of Sherborne Boys has been named Rising Star at the Independent School of the Year Awards.

Johnny Moesel, who left Sherborne Boys last year and is now studying History and Politics at the University of Oxford, picked up the trophy at a ceremony in London on Wednesday 14 October.

Simon Heard, Headmaster at Sherborne Boys, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that Johnny has been recognised with this prestigious award. He was an exceptional pupil and Head Boy who made an extraordinary contribution to life at Sherborne, not simply through his remarkable achievements, but through his kindness, integrity and commitment to others.

“What made Johnny so special was his determination to use every opportunity to make a positive difference. He inspired those around him through his intellectual curiosity, generosity of spirit and quiet confidence. We are immensely proud of everything he achieved during his time with us and delighted to see him continuing his journey at Oxford.

“Johnny is a wonderful example of the values we seek to nurture at Sherborne, and this recognition could not be more deserved.”

During his time at Sherborne, Johnny won several national competitions, including the Townsend Warner History Prize and competitions organised by the Society for Army Historical Research and the British Association for American Studies.

He also played a significant role in shaping the academic and pastoral life of Sherborne Boys, leading a whole-school review of independent learning. And he became the first pupil lead-mentor of the Junior Academic Programme, founding an academic exhibition journal showcasing work from pupils at Sherborne and neighbouring state schools, sponsored by publisher Thames & Hudson.

Johnny also established Civic Shift, a non-profit initiative dedicated to encouraging greater youth engagement in civic life, attracting support from MPs and senior civil servants.

In sport, Johnny represented Sherborne in several first teams and competed internationally for England at U18 level in fly-fishing.

Johnny himself added: “Anything of value starts with conviction. Not only did I find mine at Sherborne, but I also learnt what it means to act on it. I’m delighted to see those lessons bear fruit, and honoured to represent the school in doing so.”
