The Old Cliftonian cricket team secured a dramatic victory in the 2026 Cricketer Cup final, defeating Old Malvernians in a super over after the match ended in a tie at Arundel Castle Cricket Club on Sunday 9 August.
After posting 228 all out in 48.5 overs, the Old Cliftonians matched Old Malvernians’ total of 228 (49.4 overs) before holding their nerve in the deciding super over.
The Cricketer Cup, an annual tournament for independent school alumni, plays an important role in reconnecting former pupils with their schools and sustaining lifelong sporting friendships.
This year’s win carries particular significance. The Old Cliftonians last lifted the trophy in 1993, having also reached the final in 1987 and 1994. Notably, members of the current squad – Brooks and Meadows – are following in the footsteps of their fathers, who were part of the victorious 1993 team.
Reflecting on the achievement, Mr Jim Williams, Cricket Professional at Clifton College, said: “Yesterday’s game was a wonderful match with lots of high-quality cricket played by our young OC team. From a personal perspective, and as an OC myself, it was great to have played a small part in all their journeys and, importantly, to see them continuing to enjoy the game and flourish after leaving Clifton.”
