Breaking Records: Cricket Thrives at Christ College BreconShare

Posted: 8th June 2026

Christ College Brecon is celebrating another outstanding year of cricketing achievement, with pupils earning representative honours, and competing in record breaking matches.

This year, Christ College was named among the Top 100 Cricket Schools in the UK in The Cricketer Schools Guide 2026, recognising the strength, inclusivity and continued growth of the school’s cricket programme.

The school places a strong emphasis on providing high-quality coaching for all pupils throughout the academic year. Older pupils’ development is supported through the Aspirational Player Pathway (APP) with guidance from leading coaches, including world-class batting coach Toby Radford and Director of Elite Performance at Christ College, Jonathan ‘Fox’ Davies.

The APP is designed to support pupils who are already involved in, or aspiring towards, high-performance programmes. It consists of three key strands: to enhance physical and overall wellbeing, to build behaviours for performance, and to get ready to perform. Within cricket, these pupils receive year-round, one-to-one coaching at least once a week, alongside the squad winter nets programme. They also benefit from bespoke athletic development and regularly reviewed Individual Development Plans to support their progress.

The impact of this approach is reflected in the growing number of pupils representing regional and national cricket pathways across England and Wales. Current pupils are competing within the Glamorgan Women’s Elite Player Pathway and Emerging Player Pathway, Cricket Wales East and South squads, and Glamorgan Men’s squads. It is also shown in the booming numbers playing the game throughout the school, with 12 boys’ and girls’ teams and well over 100 fixtures taking place throughout the summer term.

On the field, the school’s cricket teams continue to produce impressive performances. In a recent fixture, Sixth Form pupils Jack and Dylan, set a new School T20 world record with a remarkable opening partnership for the 1st XI Boys of 321 runs!

Success at junior level has also continued, with the school winning the Powys Schools U11 Cricket Tournament for the past two years, highlighting the strength of the development pathway from an early age.

Annual events such as the school’s cricket festival continue to attract prestigious opposition and representative teams. This summer, the school will host fixtures with the MCC and The Forty Club, alongside visiting sides from Jersey, Gower College, and representative girls’ teams from Wales and Herefordshire.

Director of Sport, Sam Hewick, comments “The development of cricket at Christ College over the last few years has been impressive. Steve Bradley, the Director of Cricket, has been hugely instrumental in improving the school’s cricket provision and has really driven the quality of coaching and level of competition. Pupils of all ages and abilities really enjoy playing the game.”
